The bodies of the renowned American climbers Alex Lowe and David Bridges, killed in an avalanche in 1999 in the Himalayas, were found by another pair of climbers, according to a charitable organization founded and led by Lowe's widow.
Climbers David Goettler, Germany, and Ueli Steck, Switzerland, were preparing to try to reach the top of Shishapangma in Tibet, the 14th highest peak in the world, when they found two bodies frozen in a glacier, the Foundation informed charity Alex Lowe in a statement on its website.
The bodies were in clothing and equipment corresponding to that Lowe and Bridges wore when they disappeared. NBC News network reported that the bodies were found last week.
Lowe, who was 40, was seen by many as the best American climber of his generation when he and Bridges were shot down by an avalanche during expedition at the peak of about 8000 meters. A third climber Conrad Anker, was injured but survived.
"Alex and David are gone and they were frozen in time," said Lowe's widow, Jennie Lowe-Anker in a statement. "Sixteen years of life have passed and now they were found. We are grateful. Conrad, the boys and I will sojourn to Shishapangma. It's time to put Alex to rest."
Jennie married Conrad Anker in 2001 and the climber adopted her three children. She commands the Lowe Foundation, which provides financial aid and support to humanitarian programs operating in remote parts of the world.
